You can even have multiple copies installed on the same computer, which some people do for testing and to try out beta versions without trashing their primary installation. It installs in its own directory that can be moved, copied, and backed up to your heart's content because the program is not linked in any way to your operating system with messy registry entries or external libraries. All-in-all, I see just too many negatives for not having the Steam version. The biggest benefit of the standalone version is that it really is standalone. I've also read that Laminar won't give a Steam key if you bought it in another way.

Just a heads-up for anyone who is too impatient and wants in to the beta version now: rather than buying directly from Laminar, if you get it from Aerosoft it's a little cheaper and you also get 3 free airport addons (buy Xplane 10 with the automatic upgrade to Xplane 11 and the price is lower still). All-in-all, I see just too many negatives for not having the Steam version. After reading around a lot today, it seems the consensus from people that bought the last one (Xplane 10) is that it's better to wait for a Steam version to release. The only exception that I have found, so far, is my Xcrafts fleet of Embraer regional jets cause XP 12 to crash when they load.I've been thinking of picking this sim up. Most of the XP-11 add-ons that I was using before still work. I would note that the default King Air included in XP 12 is (like it was in XP 11) very good, especially when compared with the MSFS King Air, which is still littered with "INOP" controls, two years after release. Both are wonky in their own peculiar ways. With that add-on, I would be hard pressed to say whether XP or MSFS is better in terms of ground scenery. That, together with the new trees (and the fall colors!!!), made for an absolutely stunning visual and no problems with navigation using the ground. The terrain resolution out of the box is a little wanting (I can't successfully navigate to my house using ground features), but the free X-Plane 11 HD Mesh Scenery copied over and worked perfectly. When dropped out of the overcast, touched down in Boston and looked around I was gobsmacked by how wonderful the default scenery was, and especially the water/rain effects.

I did a trial run with a real weather IFR flight into KBOS using the built-in ATC and everything worked perfectly. My XP-11 payware study-level King Air runs flawlessly.

I guess that's on me and not really a complaint. Complaints? I can't run with cloud quality at maximum.
